[EMSN171] Flood simulation in Bremen, Germany
Type of Event: Flood (Flash flood);
Date/Time of Event (UTC): 2023-11-15 00:00:00;
Activation Date/Time (UTC): 2023-09-01 00:00:00;
Dedicated Mechanism: Copernicus EMS (RRM);
Affected Country: Germany;
Affected Area: Bremen, Germany;
Event Description:
The CEMS Risk and Recovery Standard has been activated by the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Aid, in order to be provided with overview maps of a potential flood event affecting the city of Bremen in Germany. The requested products will be used for disaster management exercises to prepare for real events.
The scenario for the simulation has been provided by the Authorised User (AU): heavy rainfall (60 mm/h) hit the area during 10 hours, after a prolongated rainy period in the previous days that made very high the soil moisture. Moreover, the "Flower Thaler Aue pumping station" has failed beyond repair, so that the Blumenthler Aue cannot drain into the Unterweser. As a consequence, the river Blumenthaler Aue is assumed to overflow and flood the proximity. A historic castle complex, the Burg Blomendal, is threatened by flooding.
Proposed solution and results
- The flood simulation has been provided as P05-Modelled flood extent for major events, resulting in a flood extent equal to 21027.9 ha and a water depth mainly ranging between 0.25 and 3.00 m.
- Detail maps have been collected within the P13- Ready to print maps and map books for field campaigns product, which includes also the consequence table resulting from the impact assessment analysis.
- The P14-Impact assessment analysis on assets and population shows that around 46% of building footprints are located in the area that could be flooded considering the maximum water extent modelled in the P05.
